EU's Call for Support
European Union leaders, in a press conference following the summit, emphasized their firm support for Ukraine's future within the European Union. Highlighting China's significant responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, they urged China to recognize the threat posed by the Russian war to global stability and the world economy.
President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stressed, "The ongoing Russian war jeopardizes global stability and the world economy. It also harms the most vulnerable populations worldwide, leading to increased food insecurity and rising prices. This isn't in Europe's, China's, or the world's interests."
Urgent Plea to China
Michel continued, calling on China to constructively engage in Ukraine's Peace Formula, stating, "Russia continues seeking access to technologies to fuel the war. Once again, we insist that China refrains from supplying military items to Russia. China's assistance in preventing Russia from circumventing sanctions is crucial."
The European Commission highlighted the importance of China leveraging its influence on Russia to halt the war against Ukraine. Additionally, the EU reiterated the significance of preventing China from supplying lethal weaponry to Russia.
Navigating Complex Relations
Acknowledging the complexities in EU-China relations, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the shared responsibility to compel China to act. "We've agreed that balancing our trade relations is in our mutual interests. As geopolitical tensions rise globally, it's essential for all of us to work towards ending Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine."
Emphasis on International Order
EU representatives underscored the necessity of preserving a well-functioning, rules-based international order, with the United Nations at its core.
Today's EU-China summit in Beijing focused on crucial bilateral matters and coordinating efforts to uphold global security and stability.
