The IV Playwriting Laboratory, focusing on the challenging topic of "How to Address War in Dramatic Texts," will come to its grand finale with public performative readings in various Ukrainian theaters. This project, under the auspices of the National Union of Theatre Practitioners of Ukraine and with support from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, has engaged seven playwrights and six directors in a series of workshops, masterclasses, and discussions.
Throughout the course of the laboratory, participants grappled with numerous pressing questions. They pondered which themes should or should not be tackled and when, how to authentically depict real stories and engage with witnesses, and the potential for retraumatization through text and performance. Furthermore, the group delved into the complexities of discussing war both within Ukraine and abroad, on grand stages and intimate settings.
From July to October, playwrights worked diligently to craft new plays, while in the first half of October, participating directors conducted rehearsals and readings of completed texts. Now, the public will have the opportunity to be the first to experience these new plays during public readings in theaters. Admission to these readings is free.
