LinkedIn has taken a significant step in enhancing its platform by introducing an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist job seekers. This innovative chatbot, referred to as the "job-seeking coach," is built on OpenAI's GPT-4 technology and is now accessible to select premium account users. It aims to provide valuable guidance and insights to users when evaluating job opportunities and crafting their job applications.
Users of this new chatbot can leverage it while browsing job listings by selecting from a range of questions such as "Am I a good fit for this job?" and "How can I present myself effectively for this role?" The chatbot will then analyze the user's LinkedIn profile and professional experience and provide personalized responses. For instance, it might say, "Your profile demonstrates a strong background in marketing and event planning, which aligns with the requirements of this position."
Additionally, the chatbot can identify potential gaps in a user's experience that could affect their job application. The quality of responses is of utmost importance, as the stakes are high. Gyantha Sachdeva, Vice President of Product Management at LinkedIn, emphasized the commitment to maintaining high response quality.
Furthermore, users can inquire about the employees of a specific company, and the chatbot will provide profiles of potential connections who may be in the user's second or third-degree network. This feature facilitates reaching out to individuals within the company when seeking job opportunities. The messages can also be generated using generative AI technology.
The use of AI in recruitment and job searching has faced criticism in the past for its potential bias. For instance, Amazon was criticized for using a recruiting system that reportedly downgraded resumes containing the word "women" or references to women's colleges. Research by Harvard Business Review highlighted biases against Black candidates in recommendations provided by hiring committees.
LinkedIn's launch of this new chatbot aligns with the announcement that the platform now boasts over 1 billion users. In recent months, the company has concentrated on enhancing its platform with tools like automated recruiter messaging, job descriptions, and AI-based profile optimization advice.
