Russia lost nearly as many soldiers in less than a year of war in Ukraine as the United States lost in eight years in Vietnam.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War have calculated, citing US intelligence data in The Sun, that the total Russian military losses in Ukraine are estimated at 188,000 people as of January 20, which suggests the possible elimination of 47,000 Russians in less than a year.
"The historical ratio of the wounded and killed in the war is 3:1, which indicates that Russian losses in Ukraine are now close to the total number of US deaths in the Vietnam War," the Institute's report says.
Analysts refer to data from the US National Archives, according to which the death toll in the Vietnam War was approximately 58,000 people over eight years of fighting.
During the nine years of the Afghan war, the USSR laid down the lives of, according to official figures, 15,000 soldiers. "This is the threshold that, according to the British Ministry of Defense, Russia's losses were overcome back in May 2022 after only three months of hostilities," experts say.
