The US authorities are preparing an official announcement on the supply of American-made M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
This information was confirmed to the Voice of America by a representative of the Joe Biden administration. The tanks will be purchased under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which means they will not be taken from Pentagon stocks, the source added.
Other administration sources drew attention to the fact that the decision came only days after Washington spoke out against such supplies, despite requests from Kyiv.
A third source familiar with the situation said the US could deliver about 30 M1 Abrams tanks in the next few months.
Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the announcement could be made as early as today.
Recall that administration officials have previously stated that the M1 Abrams is difficult to maintain, the process of learning to use them will take a long time, and these tanks also consume a lot of fuel. To which Ukraine replied that Western tanks would provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with greater mobility and protection against a new Russian offensive. The new tanks will also help de-occupy the territories occupied by the Russians.
As noted by the publication, the appearance of information about the softening of the US position occurred immediately after Germany allowed the sending of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. A source familiar with the matter said they were interrelated solutions.
