Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico wrote an open letter to the President of the European Council Antonio Costa and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. In it, the politician complained about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the decision to stop Russian gas transit from 2025.
The letter was published on Fico's Facebook page.
"I emphasize the unilateral nature of this decision, since the European Commission in its letter of December this year, addressed, among others, to Deputy Prime Minister Sorvakia Denisa Sakova, unequivocally stated that the conclusion of contracts for the supply or transit of Russian gas is not prohibited by EU law at this stage, since it is not subject to EU sanctions and the import of Russian gas is not currently prohibited by other provisions of Union law," he wrote.
According to Fico, Ukraine was offered other options for gas transit besides Russian, but Zelensky rejected these proposals as well. He stressed that Kyiv's decision would cause serious financial damage to EU countries.
"There is no doubt that the unilateral decision of the Ukrainian president will have a significant negative impact on our common European efforts to keep pace with the rapidly developing countries of the world," the Slovak Prime Minister said.
Fico added that he suspects that the European Commission and most EU member states have not sufficiently analyzed the economic consequences of stopping gas transit through Ukraine, but he is not sure about this. He suggested that such an analysis could have been carried out, but was not openly discussed with EU members.
