The Russian army, which occupied the exclusion zone for 36 days, threatened the world with a new nuclear catastrophe, but the tragedy was avoided. The Russians fled on the evening of March 31, 2022.
Journalists of the "Ukrainian Witness" project talked to the workers of the exclusion zone after the liberation from the invaders in early April 2022, as soon as the Russian army was expelled from the Kyiv region.
During the "managing" the Russians plundered the nearby villages, taking out everything they could from the houses: refrigerators, chairs and even carpets. The first few days, as the locals said, the occupiers felt self-confident.
The soldiers scoured everywhere and looked for former ATO participants: right on the road, they stripped down to their underwear, checked for tattoos, scars and traces of bulletproof vests on their shoulders.
Local ranger Vasily spoke about the planes that entered Ukrainian airspace from Belarus: "They launched rockets, which then flew to Kyiv. They immediately turned around and drove back."
At the same time, a resident of one of the neighboring villages said that the heavy equipment of the Russians continuously drove past her house for 15 hours.
The journalists visited the village of Strakholesye, which is located near Chernobyl. The settlement more or less survived during the occupation, since it is located a little away from the road along which the occupiers went to the capital. But the marauders got here too.
“There was new equipment for which they had not even received documents yet. There is not a single building in Chernobyl that they would not rob. They even stole KrAZ vehicles contaminated with radiation,” local resident Vladimir is indignant
