After a hacker attack on Ukrainian state registries, it turns out that the hack occurred due to a violation of cybersecurity rules, or that some of the Ukrainian employees were bribed. This was reported by Oleksandr Fediyenko, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, in an interview with Radio Liberty.

"Somewhere, most likely, some incident occurred. I think that the special services are dealing with this," he said.

The MP noted that it is difficult to say yet whether it was phishing, adding that it is possible that some of the employees who work with the registries were bribed.

"There may be components and recruitment of an employee of this institution. There may be a multi-level mechanism for planting some flash drive so that it passes a single internal perimeter and is turned on. There may also be phishing of computers of employees who may somehow work with a closed circuit remotely, which is prohibited in principle. Therefore, this is definitely not "Vasya", "Petya", but this is a clearly planned cyber attack that could have been carried out strictly taking into account a fairly systemically cool working organization," Fedienko explained.

He noted that now it is known for sure that the infrastructure where the data is stored is broken, because there is no access to it and it is being restored.

"But whether the database that was in this infrastructure was hacked, unfortunately, I do not have such information yet, I do not know," Fedienko emphasized.

The MP added that even if digital databases are destroyed, which is the worst-case scenario, it is possible to restore the information, but it takes time.

"If we are talking about restoration, then 100% - it will be, even if digital images are destroyed, then they can be restored from paper. But this will take years. But if digital images - these databases are still preserved, and only the infrastructure needs to be restored - then the restoration will take a week or two weeks... If the images really are preserved somewhere, which I hope for, and closed sources confirm this information to me, then I think that in a week or two they (the registries) will gradually begin to restore their work," he said.
