Unexplained Phenomenon
Reported by Science Alert, researchers are unable to definitively identify the cause of these lights, but they have several hypotheses. Some scientists believe that the locals may have captured a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as "earthquake lights."
Historical Accounts
Researchers have found only a handful of historical records documenting instances of light flashes in the sky associated with underground tremors, dating back centuries. Various accounts from eyewitnesses describe earthquake precursors differently, from brief seconds-long flashes to minute-long balls of fire in various colors appearing high and low in the sky.
What We Know About the Morocco Earthquake
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco on September 8th, at depths ranging from 11 to 18 kilometers. The disaster has claimed the lives of 2,862 people, with another 2,562 injured. The death toll may rise further as much of the earthquake-affected area is remote and challenging to access. International Aid and Rescue Efforts
Representatives from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Qatar have joined the search and rescue operation. Given that natural disasters of this magnitude are relatively rare in North Africa, international assistance is crucial in responding to the crisis.
This devastating earthquake has left a significant impact on Morocco, and the recovery efforts will require extensive support and resources.
