In the heart of Luxembourg, the "Ukrainian Days" festival is drawing attention to the rich tapestry of Ukrainian culture while shedding light on the ongoing destruction of Ukrainian heritage by Russian aggressors. Culture has always been a powerful tool for nations to express themselves, especially during challenging times. In this context, the festival receives strong support from the city administration of Esch-sur-Alzette, demonstrating their commitment to standing with Ukraine.
Mayor Georges Mischo of Esch-sur-Alzette noted that the city, at the onset of a full-scale war, became the first in Luxembourg to sign a twinning agreement with the Ukrainian city of Stryi. This symbolic gesture aims to encourage other cities and municipalities in Luxembourg to follow suit, extending a helping hand to Ukraine in its time of need.
Daniel Kodello, the political coordinator of the city council, emphasized that the "Ukrainian Days" festival is a unique event focused on contemporary Ukrainian art and its reflection of current events. The central square of Esch-sur-Alzette and the theater hall are hosting an exhibition of war posters titled "Graphic Art of Wartime," featuring 25 works by contemporary Ukrainian artists. The role of art in times of war was a topic of discussion, led by Ukrainian theater actor and director Vlad Troitsky and the co-founder of the "Art-Territory Ukraine" studio, Maria Manilenko.
The highlight of the festival on October 11th is the documentary-musical performance "Mother's Heart" by Vlad Troitsky, which delves into the tragedy of mothers whose children are on the front lines. The storyline weaves together a woman's memories of love, childbirth, and childhood, alongside the anticipation of what might not come to pass due to the war. This narrative combines three temporal dimensions: the past, the present, and the potential for a happier future.
The "Ukrainian Days" festival will run until October 20th. All funds raised during the events will be directed towards charitable projects for Ukraine through the LUkraine Association.
