Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to introduce a new iteration of its gaming console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), to the Japanese market starting from November. According to reports from Sony Group Corp's gaming division, Kyodo, the PS5, equipped with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, will be available for purchase on November 10 at a price of $450 (66,980 yen). The digital edition of the console, lacking a disc drive and requiring users to download games digitally, will be priced at $403 (59,980 yen).
The new model is more than 30% smaller than its predecessor, with dimensions of 35.8 cm in width and 21.6 cm in depth. The PS5 features an SSD with an expanded 1-terabyte storage capacity, designed for high-speed data transfer to significantly enhance the console's graphical performance.
It is equipped with a special AMD graphics processor capable of ray tracing, support for 4K displays, and high frame rates, along with new real-time 3D audio hardware for immersive sound effects. It's reported that the PS5 will be compatible with most PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games.
Sony has announced the discontinuation of the previous PS4 model, which was released in the fall of 2013, and will only sell its remaining inventory.
The new model will also be available in international markets, including the United States, starting in November.
