The captivating war drama "Photophobia," directed by Slovak filmmakers Ivan Ostrzhovsky and Pavol Pekarchik, offers a unique perspective on the conflict in Ukraine. After its successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the film has garnered significant attention and acclaim. Ostrzhovsky and Pekarchik, inspired by their interactions with refugees living in the Kharkiv metro during a humanitarian mission to Ukraine in 2022, aimed to capture the essence of everyday life amidst the chaos of war.
The directors noted that their film's portrayal of the war-ravaged country could easily be mistaken for a child's traumatized imagination, were it not for the undeniable reality of Ukraine today. They sought to preserve the authentic experience of Ukrainians facing adversity and uncertainty.
According to Filmotor's CEO, Michaela Chaykova, "Photophobia" blurs the line between documentary and fiction, making it a truly unique cinematic achievement. The film's recent Venice Film Festival win, the Europa Cinemas Label Award, is expected to open doors to a wide distribution at film festivals and theaters worldwide.
The Czech premiere of "Photophobia" is scheduled for the International Documentary Film Festival Ji.hlava at the end of this month. It has also secured spots in nearly ten other festivals, in addition to theatrical releases in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Furthermore, "Photophobia" has been chosen as Slovakia's entry for the "Best International Feature Film" category at the Oscars.
