Social Media X has rolled out a new feature, enabling its users to make audio and video calls within the platform. While this is undoubtedly exciting news, the catch is that the feature is only accessible to a limited number of users at the moment.
Some fortunate users of the platform have already received notifications about this new calling function. Additionally, the app settings now include a toggle switch that allows users to enable audio and video calls and choose with whom they wish to communicate via this method. To make a call, users can simply access the feature through the phone icon located in the upper right corner of the screen.
These calls can be initiated with people from a user's contact list, those they are following, and verified Premium subscribers. However, it remains unclear how widely the audio and video call service has been introduced and whether it will be available to all users, including those without Premium subscriptions.
In recent statements, Elon Musk revealed that this feature will be accessible on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC without the need for a phone number.
Social Media X has begun to implement charges for the use of basic platform functions for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines. The platform has plans to extend these changes to users worldwide.
New users who opt out of a subscription will now be limited to reading posts, watching videos, and following other users, with the full suite of features available exclusively to Premium subscribers.
