Filming has kicked off for the horror film "The Witch of Konotop" in Ukraine. The plot revolves around an ancient witch from Konotop who renounces her powers for love but, amidst a full-scale war, Russian soldiers brutally kill her beloved. Seeking revenge, she reclaims her powers, unleashing terrifying punishment upon her fiancé's killers.
The lead role is portrayed by Tetyana Malkova ("Cossacks: The Exhilarating History"), while her beloved, Andriy, is played by Taras Tsimbalyuk ("Catching Hayduks").
According to the creators, the film draws inspiration from a real story of a woman from Konotop who cursed Russian occupiers in her hometown, echoing Ukrainian folklore motifs.
On the first day of shooting, the creative team conducted a ritual with voodoo dolls on set, called the "orc needle."
For director Andriy Kolesnyk, this film marks his cinematic debut. The idea, script, and showrunning are credited to Yaroslav Voychehovsk ("The Stronghold," "Zakhar Berkut," "Mavka: The Forest Song"). The film's cinematographer is Konstantin Ponomarov ("Sniper: The White Raven," "Maxim Osa: The Gold of Pessigholz"), and the producer is Irina Kostyuk (the film trilogy "Crazy Wedding," the comedy "A Great Walk," the animated film "Mavka: The Forest Song"). The character design sketches were developed by Olga Navrotska.
