US President Donald Trump has finally realized that despite all his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin simply does not want the conflict to end. This is what Defense and Foreign Affairs Editor Con Coughlin writes for The Telegraph.

"While it was obvious to anyone with even the slightest interest in the conflict in Ukraine that Putin was determined to wage war until he achieved his goal of bringing Ukraine under Kremlin control, Trump persistently continued to seek a peace deal," the author of the article emphasized.

According to Coughlin, despite the fact that Trump continued to maintain constant contact with Putin, he realized that the Russian dictator was simply "playing on his nerves" to buy time for his offensive in Ukraine.

"Putin's cynical use of Trump's goodwill could not only provoke an angry reaction from the American leader. It could prove a significant turning point in the conflict if, as now seems likely, the United States resumes deliveries of advanced weapons to Kyiv," the expert emphasized.

It is noted that while Trump believed that there was an opportunity to achieve a breakthrough in relations with Putin, he did not want to supply weapons to Ukraine. Just last week, before the last phone call between the presidents of the United States and Russia, the White House announced that it was suspending the supply of critical weapons to Ukraine in order to "put America's interests first."

"Trump's anger at Putin's evasive tactics forced him to reverse this decision, and the president agreed to send U.S. defensive weapons to Ukraine. In addition, he is seriously considering approving a Senate bill that proposes to significantly increase sanctions against Russia for refusing to end the war," Coughlin noted.

According to the author of the material, if these measures are fully implemented, they could have a serious impact on the final outcome of the conflict in Ukraine.

"If the Russians have failed to make any significant progress while the Ukrainians are suffering from a severe shortage of U.S. aid, they are unlikely to make much better progress if Trump resumes military support for Kyiv," the expert said.

In addition, the Russian economy is in a difficult position, with interest rates at 20% and inflation estimated at 15%, so any move by the U.S. to impose additional sanctions on Moscow could signal that Putin could suddenly find himself in a very uncomfortable position, Coughlin added.
