At a meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in China, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called the Russian war against Ukraine a “military operation.” The head of his administration, Gergely Guillas, tried to justify Orban for such words.

In comments to the Hungarian television channel ATV, Guillas responded to criticism from US Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman, who said Orbán “chose to stand with the man whose forces are responsible for crimes against humanity in Ukraine,” apparently referring to Putin.

“If you look back at previous years, you will see meetings there – a lot of meetings between Joe Biden and President Putin,” rebuked Orbán’s chief of staff.

However, the journalist noted that these meetings took place only before Russia carried out a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. To this, Guillas stated the importance of “talking about peace and the need to put an end to Russian aggression.”

“This is exactly what the prime minister did, and I would advise others to do the same,” he tried to justify Orban.

At the same time, Guillas avoided a direct answer to the question of why Orban, at a meeting with the head of the Kremlin, called the war against Ukraine a “military operation.” The Hungarian official recalled that his country’s official position is condemnation of the war and respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
