Russia is closely monitoring the development of the situation around Greenland and the intention of the newly elected US President Donald Trump to gain control over the island.

This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov, according to Russian media.

"This is a matter of bilateral relations between the United States and Denmark, but Moscow is closely monitoring the development of the situation," he said.

Peskov noted that if the fate of Greenland depends on the opinion of the island's residents, then we must also remember the opinion of people from the "new regions of Russia."

"We must show the same respect for the opinion of these people (from the occupied territories of Ukraine)," he added.

The press secretary of the Russian president also said during a conversation with journalists that Europe is allegedly afraid to decisively respond to Trump's statements about Greenland, so politicians use cautious wording.

In addition, the pro-Kremlin news agency TASS added that Peskov said that "the Arctic is in the sphere of national and strategic interests of the Russian Federation," commenting on US claims to Canada and Greenland.
