Journalists from the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona, together with a team of volunteers, confirmed the liquidation of 34,857 Russian soldiers in the war in Ukraine. Over the past two weeks, the list has increased by 953 names.
The losses increased most among mobilized and former prisoners. In total, journalists found 4,056 obituaries in open sources dedicated to those who were sent to war through mobilization. More than a thousand of them were liquidated in the period from June 2023, that is, after the start of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, the material says.
Journalists claim that during the war, 6,410 prisoners and 3,532 volunteers were killed.
“The above casualty figures are the most conservative estimate of those killed among those mobilized, since we take into account only those cases where the death was confirmed publicly and when the status of the combatant can be established,” the journalists emphasize.
