The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) conducted a vital test launch in preparation for its planned mission to send astronauts into space in 2025. The spacecraft, as part of the "Gaganyaan" mission, was launched from Sriharikota on a momentous Saturday. This launch came after a minor setback earlier in the day when the first attempt was halted just five seconds before liftoff.
The purpose of this test launch was to ascertain whether the crew could safely abort the mission in the event of any malfunction. As part of the "Test Vehicle Demonstration 1" mission, ISRO declared it a success after the launch.
The actual piloted mission with three astronauts aboard, heading for a 400-kilometer low Earth orbit, will proceed only after a series of successful unmanned tests.
India approved the mission to send a crew into orbit in December 2018. The estimated cost of the Gaganyaan project is approximately $1 billion, and it is slated for a 2025 launch.
