Collaborative Nomination On November 28, 2023, the National Commission of the Republic of Estonia for UNESCO filed a collective nomination to UNESCO, representing memory institutions from multiple Baltic states. This joint effort aims to nominate birch bark letters, sent from Siberia between 1945 and 1965, to the UNESCO Documentary Heritage List "Memory of the World."
Inclusion of Siberian Letters The proposed list comprises 148 documents from the years 1940-1965, stored across 31 memory institutions. Notably, among these documents are birch bark letters sent from Siberia and other personal materials created by political prisoners and deportees. UNESCO "Memory of the World" The UNESCO "Memory of the World" list encompasses globally significant documentary heritage. This list, a prominent part of the broader "Memory of the World" program, focuses on fostering collaboration between memory institutions to preserve and make accessible documentary heritage. Currently, the list contains 558 entries.
