The Russian Ministry of Defense is lying about the “active defense” of its troops in the Avdeevka area of the Donetsk region in order to hide the lack of progress of the occupiers in the offensive.
As analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in their report, the enemy cannot transform tactical achievements at the front into operationally significant successes. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that offensive actions in Ukraine are part of “active defense.” He is now trying to reduce expectations about the occupying forces' ability to achieve important gains.
According to ISW experts, on December 1, Shoigu said that the Russians were seizing “more advantageous” positions. At the same time, the official noted the brigades that are believed to be operating in the eastern regions of Ukraine.
"Russian officials are deliberately misleading by calling these offensive actions part of 'active defense,'" the report notes.
Analysts believe that the Russian command would have to pursue a specific operational goal if they openly declared that they were trying to capture Avdiivka. However, so far the Russian Ministry of Defense is not confident in the invaders’ ability to transform tactical-level achievements into operationally significant successes.
