The European Commission (EC) has taken a firm stance against Meta, the parent company of Instagram, urging the tech giant to submit a comprehensive report outlining its efforts to address content related to sexual violence against children on the popular social media platform. This move comes after the EC's October request for information on measures to counter the spread of terrorist and violent content and a subsequent inquiry in November focusing on the protection of minors.
In its official statement, the EC emphasized that it also seeks information regarding Instagram's recommendation system for the dissemination of potentially harmful content. These requests align with the EU's Digital Services Act, which mandates major tech companies to intensify their efforts in combating illegal and harmful content within their platforms.
Failure to respond adequately to such requests may result in an official investigation and potential penalties for Meta. Notably, similar inquiries have been directed at other major tech players, including ByteDance's TikTok and Elon Musk's social media platform, X.
