Pope Francis, known for his longstanding interest in climate-related issues, aimed to make history by becoming the first Pope to address a UN climate conference. Despite his intention, the 86-year-old leader of the Catholic Church had to cancel his trip to Dubai as he continues to recover from the flu and lung inflammation.

During the COP28 conference, held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, the Pope's message emphasized the need to forgive the debts of the most impoverished nations severely affected by climate change. Cardinal Parolin conveyed the Pope's call for a global cessation of coal, oil, and gas usage, as well as a shift in lifestyle to save the planet.

This plea for debt forgiveness aligns with Pope Francis's commitment to addressing climate challenges and promoting environmental stewardship. While the Pope's physical absence was felt at the conference, his influential words echoed through the assembly, urging nations to take immediate and collective action to combat climate change.
