Landmark Agreement Reached
After more than 36 hours of negotiations, representatives from the three institutions hammered out a political agreement on various aspects of AI use, including forecasting applications, facial recognition, and its utilization by law enforcement agencies. This monumental accord is considered a significant milestone in regulating AI globally.
Technical Refinement Ahead
While the agreement marks a pivotal moment, there's an anticipation for substantial technical refinement of the law's text. This will play a crucial role in enhancing the achieved political consensus.
Historical Significance Emphasized
Dragoș Tudorache, a Member of the European Parliament and one of the rapporteurs on the AI law, emphasized the historical nature of this agreement. He stated, "We are the first globally to establish real regulation for AI, steering the development and evolution of this technology toward a human-centric approach."
Clear Rules Set for AI Use
At the same time, Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, highlighted on social media the EU's role in establishing clear regulations for AI usage. He remarked, "The AI law is much more than rule-setting; it's a launching pad for startups and researchers within the EU, positioning them at the forefront of the global AI race."
Origins and Approval
The initiative for regulating artificial intelligence emerged within the European Union in 2021. The project forming the basis of the AI law was approved by the European Parliament in June of this year.
