Exploring Forced Migration Through Contemporary Ballet
In a groundbreaking move in Kyiv's cultural scene, the contemporary ballet "D.I.M." will take center stage, addressing the poignant narrative of forced migration. Choreographed and directed by Ilya Miroshnichenko, the production promises a riveting performance interwoven with live music from a string quintet.
A Tale of Resilience and Home
"D.I.M." encapsulates the journey of resilient individuals, forcibly confined within the compartments of an evacuation train. Adapting to new life norms yet undefeated, the ballet pays homage to those who have encountered loss and the essence of what home truly signifies—a process, a path embarked upon by all.
The creators, individuals who underwent evacuation during times of conflict, bring their personal experiences onto the stage, crafting a visceral portrayal.
Physical and Spiritual Reflections
Focused on the corporeal reflection of home and its emotional significance for those displaced from their homelands, the ballet employs elaborate stage design to intricately convey symbolism integral to the performance.
The Collaborative Vision
This production, led by dancer and choreographer Ilya Miroshnichenko, artist Kateryna Kuznetsova, and exclusively involving Ukrainian artists, receives support from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the Cultural Stabilization Fund from the Goethe-Institut.
Composer and cellist Viktor Rekalo has crafted an exclusive musical composition for the string quintet, to be performed live during the show.
Premiere and Insha Dance Company's Vision
The premiere of "D.I.M." is scheduled for January 30, 2024, at the International Center for Culture and Arts in Kyiv (formerly known as the October Palace). Insha Dance Company, formed in 2019 by Ilya Miroshnichenko and Kateryna Kuznetsova, aims to elevate and popularize dance theatre in Ukraine through a European lens.
The company's overarching goal is to facilitate the return of professional dancers from abroad to Ukrainian stages, fostering a competitive environment for the development of Ukrainian dancers and choreographers domestically.
Currently, Insha Dance Company's repertoire boasts four distinct choreographic productions, each exploring diverse themes and supported by various cultural institutions and programs.
