For the first time since the start of a full-scale war, the Ukrainian army has gained an advantage over the aggressor in the use of tanks. Military observer David Ax writes about this on the pages of Forbes.

He cites excerpts from a publication by a Russian military blogger who analyzes the tactics of using tanks by both sides.

"Our tanks can only operate from closed firing positions. Direct fire and infantry support are not available to them," the Russian blogger writes.

He cites the very effective work of Ukrainian FPV drones as the main reason for this: if the Russians try to send tanks to attack, Ukrainian drone operators usually burn them before they reach the line of fire.

"The enemy has achieved sufficient mass and diversity of its drones, and has perfected the tactics of their use. Therefore, in the tactical direction, where the enemy has at least 2 companies of attack drones (FPV) + 2 companies of reconnaissance UAVs (this is in addition to the copters of military units), it completely closes the possibility of our armored vehicles and tanks. Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles/armored personnel carriers simply do not reach the line of transition to the attack - they are extinguished already 3-6 km from the front, in the depth of our formations," the Russian complains.

But Ukrainian tanks, although they suffer from Russian drones, still have much more freedom of action on the line of contact. According to the blogger, Russian drones demonstrate significantly lower efficiency, since they are more vulnerable to electronic warfare systems. And there are very few such drones that operate on better protected frequencies or on fiber optics, so they are used only in priority areas.

"The enemy has the ability to use its tanks not only from closed firing positions, but also for short direct fire attacks in secondary directions. (...) The enemy demonstrates high adaptability. And even if it lacks infantry to hold large areas, in terms of technological types of troops they still represent a serious opponent," the Russian blogger claims.
