The European Commission is preparing an alternative assistance package for Ukraine in the event that during the summit on February 1, the EU countries fail to approve a four-year support program for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros.
This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at a conference with the participation of Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo.
"The main priority is to achieve agreement among all 27 EU countries, but we are already working on operational solutions that can be used otherwise. Before Christmas on December 25, we transferred 1.5 billion euros to Ukraine, the last tranche of our 18 billion euro program for 2023. Thus, Kiev has funds for the beginning of this year,” said the head of the EC.
At the same time, von der Leyen did not disclose the details of the alternative package. In turn, the Belgian prime minister expressed hope that the 50 billion euro aid program could be agreed upon without problems.
