A Historic Abdication in Denmark

In a historic move, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has formally stepped down from the throne after 52 years of rule. The official declaration of abdication was signed on January 14th, marking a significant moment in Danish royal history.

Succession to King Frederick X

The 55-year-old son of the Queen, Frederick, automatically ascends to the throne as King Frederick X. The announcement of his new title will be made by the country's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.

Farewell to a Monarch

Thousands gathered on the streets of Copenhagen to bid farewell to Queen Margrethe, who becomes the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate. Her reign, spanning over five decades, has left an indelible mark on the history of the Danish monarchy.

A Unique Ceremony

In accordance with the constitutional protocol, there was no coronation ceremony, as it is not mandated by the country's constitution. The Queen will move to Amalienborg, the palace complex in Copenhagen, serving as the winter residence for the Danish royal family.

Celebrations and Ceremonies

The new King and Queen will host an event for specially invited guests at Christiansborg. Later, an honorary salute and 27-gun salutes will take place. The Royal Standard at Christiansborg Palace will be lowered, and the flag will be raised at Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg.

End of an Era

On December 31st, in her New Year's address, the 83-year-old Queen announced her decision to abdicate after 52 years of rule. Queen Margrethe II ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, becoming the world's sole female monarch following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
