Ukraine could hit Russian A-50 and Il-22 aircraft with the help of the American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system.
Advisor to the Mayor of Mariupol Petr Andryushchenko reports this on his Telegram channel. According to him, the strikes were carried out around 21:00. “Preliminarily, the A-50 was shot down, and the Il-22 was shot down, but it was in the air and trying to get to the nearest airfield. It disappeared from the radar after the descent began, in the Kerch area,” he added.
Andryushchenko also released archival photographs of the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft dated December 27. “A photograph of our Mariupol resistance indicating the landing site, which we received in order to hunt for pilots. Now - to the archive. With pleasure. Who is next there?” - he noted.
The Southern Defense Forces noted that the A-50 helps the invaders determine the location of Ukrainian objects and direct attacks on them. In total, the Russian Federation has three A-50 units and six A-50U units. One plane costs about $330 million.
The military also recalled that last year one Russian A-50 was already damaged. Then the plane, located at the Machulishchi airbase, attacked an unmanned aerial vehicle.
