Infinix, a relatively lesser-known Chinese smartphone manufacturer, showcased a groundbreaking feature at CES 2024 – smartphones with E-Ink technology embedded in their back panels. As reported by The Verge, these additional screens on the back can change colors seamlessly, offering users a unique and customizable experience.

Users have the flexibility to alter the color of the back cover from a range of options. For instance, a monochromatic smartphone can be transformed into vibrant shades of blue, pink, green, and red. The added bonus is the ability to mix colors, resulting in a smartphone with a personalized and distinct design.

An intriguing feature is the display of time, emojis, and certain widgets on the back panel. The proprietary technology behind this innovation is named E-Colour Shift, utilizing Prism 3 electronic inks from E-Ink. The back panel comprises 60 individual elements, each capable of changing hues depending on the time or user's mood.

Infinix emphasizes that the constantly active E-Ink display does not compromise the device's battery life. Energy is only consumed during moments when the ink color changes. Unfortunately, the release date for these chameleon-like smartphones is yet to be announced.

This comes after Samsung introduced a "indestructible" smartphone capable of functioning without a battery, offering a unique design and compensating for its outdated appearance with impressive autonomy and durability.
