United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has admitted that staff from the UN Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) were involved in the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In a statement, he said the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services had launched an investigation. Of the 12 defendants, nine were fired, one was reportedly killed, and the identities of the other two are being investigated.
“Any UN employee involved in terrorist acts will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution. The Secretariat is ready to cooperate with the competent authorities that can bring these individuals to justice,” Guterres said.
Following the scandal, the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Estonia and Japan decided to suspend funding for the agency. The UN Secretary General said that now UNRWA will not be able to provide full support to civilians in the Gaza Strip.
"While I understand their concerns - I myself was horrified by these accusations - I strongly urge the governments that have suspended their contributions to at least guarantee the continuity of UNRWA activities," he added.
