The world is definitely in the pre-war era. The presumption against the use of force, which was the basis of the world order after the Second World War, has been lost, says military analyst Simon Diggins, Sky News reports.

“In recent months there has been a feeling that the inevitable tensions in a complex world can only be resolved through war. Nothing is inevitable, but the invasion of Ukraine in particular showed that Russia views war as a political tool, as a tool to change the world order in its favor , and not just as a means of protection," he noted. "China also seeks reunification with Taiwan, and Iran in its region wants to get its “place in the sun.”

According to him, the situation in Eastern Europe is very dangerous.

"Russia has doubled its defense spending over the past year: it now spends 6% of its GDP, or one third of all government spending, on the military. We, by contrast, spend just over 2% of our GDP... Russians are always ready to adapt, are using the crucible of war to reform, restructure and rearm their forces," Diggins added.

He predicts there will be a ceasefire in Ukraine or "some kind of uneasy stalemate" - perhaps this year, but almost certainly by next year.

"Then we will be faced with a 'new Russian army' that will be used wherever President Putin wants, and he has a long list of 'perestroikas' to correct what he sees as the catastrophe of the collapse of the Soviet Union," the analyst stated.
