Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer proposed holding a referendum on the restoration of general military conscription in the country.

Kretschmer has already discussed this initiative with the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, Carsten Breuer, writes Bild. After this, Breuer stated that the state now faces a different type of military threat than at the time when compulsory military service was abolished.

According to the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, the Ministry of Defense is developing several models of compulsory military service. What they have in common is that “they all allow the Bundeswehr to grow.”

“I would really like for us to vote for one, two or three options for such a call and for this issue to also be presented to the Germans,” Kretschmer commented on the prospect.

The publication notes that, apparently, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is against returning to the military conscription system, which was in the country until 2011.

According to Breuer, it is possible to introduce the so-called Swedish model, which implies that five times more young people serve in the military than are regularly in the army. In the event of a crisis, they are called into the army as recruits.

At the same time, the publication notes that general military conscription in Germany is unlikely to be introduced under the current government, since the main political forces have stated that they are not ready to adopt the relevant law.
