The administration of United States President Joe Biden will work with Congress on possible sanctions against the International Criminal Court.

According to the Financial Times, Republican Jim Risch asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken if he would support a decision aimed at preventing "the ICC from poking its nose into the affairs of countries that have independent, legitimate democratic judiciaries."

"We want to work with you on a bipartisan basis to find an answer. I think we need to consider the appropriate steps to address the deeply flawed decision [of the ICC]," Blinken responded.

The publication notes that the Secretary of State's openness to bipartisan cooperation demonstrates the level of anger in Washington over the possibility of issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Republicans have not said what sanctions they are considering, but officials expect them to target ICC prosecutor Karim Khan and others involved in the investigation. House Speaker Mike Johnson could hold a vote on sanctions as soon as this week.

At the same time, the position of the Democrats is less clear, the publication writes. The democratic leadership criticized the court, but also spoke about imposing sanctions.
