Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo (Open Vld party) announced that he would resign after losing the election.
According to the Brussels newspaper Le Soir, the visibly moved politician commented on the results of the parliamentary elections with tears in his eyes. After his speech there was thunderous applause and cheers.
"It was a particularly difficult evening for us, we lost. As of tomorrow, I will resign as prime minister. But the Liberals are strong, we will be back," he said.
In the national elections, his party Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats received 5.6% of the vote, N-VA (New Flemish Alliance) 17.4%, and VLAAMS BELANG (Vlemish Interest) 14.4%.
