We must defend the country: Germany called for depriving Ukrainian men of temporary protection

The head of the Youth Union of the CDU/CSU (a bloc of center-right political parties), Johannes Winkel, called for depriving Ukrainian men of military age of the status of temporary protection, and therefore of state support in Germany, writes Zeit.
In an interview with a German publication, he said that supporting Ukrainian women and their children with social benefits is normal. However, Ukrainian men of military age “should not have the right to protection in Germany at all, but should defend their country.” Providing weapons to Ukraine and at the same time depriving it of its own defenders is “outright cynicism,” Winkel emphasized.
His statement came on the heels of a call by the leader of the regional group Christian Social Union (a political party in Germany), Alexander Dobryndt, for Ukrainians who are unemployed to return “to the safe areas of Western Ukraine.”
