The leaders of the states and governments of the European Union member countries have agreed on the leadership of the bloc for the next 5 years. The discussion lasted about an hour.

As a European Pravda correspondent reports from Brussels, the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen from the center-right European People's Party (EPP) was approved for the post of President of the European Commission. This will be her second five-year term in this post.

Her candidacy must be finally approved on July 18 during a vote in the European Parliament. At least 361 votes will be needed to support Ursula von der Leyen, and her chances of success are assessed as high.

At the same time, António Costo, who until recently headed the Portuguese government, should be appointed president of the European Council. It is noteworthy that the leaders agreed to appoint his candidacy for 2.5 years, after which Costa could be re-appointed for another 2.5 years.

The current Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, should become the High Representative of the EU for security and foreign policy for the next 5 years. It is noted that this is the first time in EU history that a candidate from Eastern Europe has been appointed to this position.

Roberta Metsola is expected to be reconfirmed as President of the European Parliament. However, this decision remains with the European Parliament.
