Ukrainian defenders likely defeated the elite Russian 83rd Airborne Brigade in Volchansk, Kharkov region, Forbes writes.

“Russia’s advance towards Victory Day is turning into a bloodbath... for Russian troops,” the publication says.

It is noted that it may have been aimed at capturing a wide and deep section of territory in order to bring heavy artillery closer to Kharkov or even advance on the city itself.

"Neither happened. A couple of weeks after the offensive began on May 9, about 30,000 Russian soldiers were stuck in the town of Vovchansk, just a few miles south of the border," the newspaper writes.

It is reported that the Russian 83rd Airborne Brigade may have retreated from Volchansk after a costly three-week deployment to restore combat effectiveness due to the large number of casualties and those refusing to fight.

“If this is confirmed, it will be a serious loss for the new Russian northern group of troops, which includes about seven regiments and brigades. And the losses of the Russians in Volchansk could become much greater, since the survivors of an entire battalion - and this is hundreds of military personnel - were locked in a chemical plant in the center of Volchansk,” the article says.

It is indicated that the 83rd Airborne Brigade is or was an elite unit. In the spring, this brigade took part in the battles for Chasov Yar.
