This week, an external radiation monitoring station near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was destroyed due to shelling and a fire. This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

It is emphasized that because of this, the effectiveness of the station’s capabilities to detect and measure any radioactive release during an emergency has further decreased.

It is reported that the destroyed facility is located approximately 16 kilometers southwest of the station.

“Since the beginning of 2022, several radiation monitoring stations in the 30-kilometer zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant have been out of action at various times due to damage received as a result of the conflict. Four stations, that is, more than a quarter of the 14 that existed before the conflict, are currently inaccessible ", the message says.

It is also noted that the latest incident occurred several days after a 16-hour power outage in the city of Energodar led to a temporary shutdown of the work of some radiological environmental monitoring stations.

"The operation of remote radiation monitoring equipment is a critical part of ensuring nuclear safety worldwide. These systems are important for continuously monitoring radiation levels and, in the event of an emergency, for quickly assessing current and potential radiological exposure and what protective measures may be required," contacted the IAEA.
