North Korea said it launched two ballistic missiles on Monday, with one of them possibly exploding mid-flight, scattering debris across the mainland. Reuters writes about this with reference to a statement by the South Korean military.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile that flew about 600 km and a second ballistic missile that flew about 120 km, both from an area near the west coast.

Based on its trajectory, the second missile may have landed in an area close to the North's capital Pyongyang, but the military could not comment further. South Korea is still analyzing the launch and cannot confirm whether there were casualties or damage to North Korean property, military spokesman Lee Sung-jung said at a briefing.

"We strongly condemn North Korea's missile launch as a provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, noting that South Korea has shared information about the missiles with U.S. and Japanese authorities.

It is noted that the first missile launched on Monday was similar to the KN-23 short-range ballistic missile that Russia uses in the war against Ukraine.

South Korean officials have said North Korea's short-range ballistic missile launches may be aimed at showcasing its wares to potential buyers.
