The Alliance must be prepared for an even more hostile Russia in the next decade.

Estonian President Alar Karis stated this during a meeting with Lithuanian leader Gitanas Nausėda, Estonian public broadcasting company ERR reports. “To this end, NATO has good collective defense plans, which must be filled with the necessary forces and weapons systems,” he emphasized.

According to Caris, the allies should discuss increasing defense spending to 2.5-3% of GDP, since the current 2% may not be enough. It is also necessary to pay attention to strengthening the air defense of the Alliance member countries.

He added that the main topics of the NATO summit in Washington will be full, long-term and effective support for Ukraine, as well as increased readiness to counter the threat from Russia. “The alliance must send a clear signal that NATO will support Ukraine as long as necessary. Ukraine’s membership is not negotiable, the process is irreversible,” the president emphasized.

He noted that the “imposed peace” will only be temporary, and Russia should be held accountable for its crimes. The president also said that Estonia plans to allocate at least 0.25% of its GDP to help Ukraine.

"If the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine are not respected, this will lead to new and bigger wars in the future. Russia and other aggressors will only be encouraged to carry out new attacks. That is why the only strategy that works now is to support Ukraine as much as possible. NATO has succeeded overcome previous hesitations regarding military assistance to Ukraine There should be no restrictions on further assistance," Karis said.
