The unsuccessful assassination attempt on Donald Trump added to his chances of taking a seat in the White House following the results of the US presidential elections. Many fear that Trump's second term could be marked by a breakdown in transatlantic relations. Bild writes about this.
Political science professor Thomas Jäger from the University of Cologne also believes that “Germany will no longer be a red rag for Trump.”
“With the economy doing worse than the US and the government spending more on defense, relations may not be as tense as they were during his first term,” the expert said.
At the same time, he emphasizes that if Trump comes to power, the European security system will be in a precarious position.
"The very fact that Trump is in power weakens NATO. Because even if the US does not leave NATO, we can expect Trump to cancel joint defense at any time. Right now it depends on the US because European governments did not care about it for decades," Yeager explains.
In his opinion, such a situation will be beneficial for Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, because he will be able to move closer to his goal of achieving political dominance over Europe.
“Trump wants to force Ukraine to negotiate by threatening to stop arms supplies. And he wants to put pressure on Russia by announcing that otherwise he will supply Ukraine with even more weapons. The result will not be peace, but a delayed surrender of Ukraine,” says the political scientist.
