Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny spoke at the RUSI Land Warfare Conference 2024 in London as the Ambassador of Ukraine.

In his Telegram channel, he said that during his speech he shared the Ukrainian experience of struggle and emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine and strengthening the coalition of the free world in confronting destabilization, aggression and tyranny.

He called on free and democratic nations to think about their own defense, and also shared the lessons that Ukrainians learned from full-scale war. So, he said that wars must be avoided, and if they come, be prepared.

"Perhaps the most difficult and important component is the readiness of society, based on honest and transparent communication between the government and the people. Society must agree to temporarily give up a number of freedoms for the sake of survival. Modern wars, unfortunately, are total. They require efforts not only army, but also society as a whole,” Zaluzhny said.

During war, one must concentrate on survival, and using it for one's own purposes is a crime, he added. According to the former Commander-in-Chief, the stability of the Ukrainian nation can be ensured by technologies used on the battlefield.

Zaluzhny added that he has no doubt that tyrants will always use war as a tool to maintain power. Therefore, the rest of the world must build reliable protection against them.

"Compliance with yesterday's rules of war will not lead to today's or tomorrow's successes. It is the awareness of this that can save many, many lives. We must begin to deal with the consequences of the new rules of war." I took this quote from retired American General Stanley McChrystal. And then he had these words: “If not, then we will all be left behind.” But I would say more categorically: otherwise we will all die,” he concluded his speech.
