Americans are divided on whether the United States should continue funding Ukraine, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

The poll found that 48% of Americans say their country "has a responsibility to help Ukraine defend itself from a Russian invasion." However, 49% of Americans disagreed with the idea that their country has such a "responsibility."

The Biden administration announced Monday that the military would send Ukraine at least $200 million for air defense and other weapons, and committed $1.5 billion in long-term support for the country's defense.

Despite the disagreement over aid to Ukraine, Americans in the Pew poll also overwhelmingly favored continuing "tough economic sanctions against Russia" over its invasion, with 68% saying they either "strongly" or "mostly" favor the sanctions.

In a speech earlier this month, President Biden said Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin were “losing” their war against Ukraine and that NATO was growing stronger.

“Together, we have built a global coalition to stand with Ukraine. Make no mistake, Russia will lose this war. In more than two years of Putin’s war, their losses have been staggering. More than 350,000 Russian troops, dead, wounded. ... Many young people have left Russia because they no longer see a future in Russia,” Biden said.

The Pew poll was conducted July 1-7 and included 9,424 respondents, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.3 percentage points. The question on sanctions included 4,747 respondents, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
