US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, commenting on the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow, said that this indicates plans to become more involved in the war in Ukraine. This is reported by Reuters, citing Campbell's statement at a hearing in the Senate.

"I think we are likely to hear news of India becoming more directly involved in Ukraine. I am grateful for that. I think India wants to play a responsible role at the global level," Campbell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

As Reuters reports, the Indian Embassy in Washington, commenting on Campbell's statement, referred to a press briefing by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in which he said that more needs to be done to stimulate talks to end the conflict in Ukraine and that India is one of the few countries maintaining contacts with both sides.

"We believe we need to be more proactive," Jaishankar said, adding that before his visit to Moscow, Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Italy.

"I can reasonably expect there to be more contacts between us and Ukraine, and between us and Russia," he added.
