German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the "principle of hope" will not be able to protect the country from Putin.
In an article for Bild, she writes that the images of the Russian strike on the Okhmatdet children's hospital in Kyiv and many other images of a full-scale war are imprinted in her memory: the siege of Mariupol, the massacre in Bucha. Despite this, Kyiv decided to invite Moscow to the next peace summit because it is fighting for peace, Baerbock notes.
"By canceling the peace conference, Putin is exposing himself: he does not want to admit to the world community (including many countries close to Russia) that he wants Ukraine to submit to him. That he continues to deny Ukraine the right to an independent existence. For every peace initiative, for all our diplomatic work aimed at ending the hostilities, Putin responds with escalation, new refusals of diplomacy. Not just for 893 days. But for years," the article says.
The minister emphasizes that Russia has systematically violated disarmament treaties, and has also developed prohibited weapons that can be equipped with nuclear weapons, deploying them in Kaliningrad. In addition, Moscow has started the largest war in Europe since 1945.
The principle of hope will not protect Germany from Putin's Russia, Baerbock notes. According to her, protection will be provided by supporting Ukraine and investing in its own security, including the deployment of long-range American systems.
"We need a reliable deterrent against Russia, so that it does not dare to do this. A deterrent that will also protect the Poles, the Balts and the Finns - our partners who directly border Russia and have seen how it has used hybrid measures on the border in recent months. Because if we do not rely on the principle of hope, then it is not only about the security of Mariupol, Bucha and the Okhmatdet hospital. It is also about the security of Poland, Finland and the Baltic States. And their children's hospitals," she added.
