Russian occupiers torture Ukrainian prisoners of war, starting from the first interrogations. At the same time, the practice of torture in Russian captivity is "widespread and systematic".
This was stated by the head of the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine Danielle Bell in an interview with the Dutch television channel NOS. She noted that the Russian Federation tortured 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war in its prisons.
"They are tortured during the first interrogation. They are beaten with metal rods, they are given severe electric shocks. They are stripped naked. It is horrific. It is the worst thing I have seen in my 20 years of visiting prisoners on behalf of the UN. Torture is widespread and structural. 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war have been tortured, and this is a war crime," she said.
As is known, torture violates Article 3 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. On August 7, the deputy commander of the Ukrainian brigade said that Russian authorities in a pre-trial detention center in the Rostov region tortured and "brutally" killed a Ukrainian prisoner of war who served with him.
"Bell's statements and previous monitoring mission reports on Russia's violations of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war are consistent with ISW's long-standing assessments of Russia's systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in occupied Ukraine and with respect to Ukrainian prisoners of war," the report by the Institute for the Study of War states.
