The Ukrainian Armed Forces operation in the Kursk region showed that Russian "red lines" do not exist. This opinion was expressed by Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, former commander of the US ground forces in Europe.
"This refutes the fear that Putin will escalate and use nuclear weapons. The worst thing he did was fire missiles at another supermarket in Ukraine. We held back for too long," he emphasized in an interview with DW.
When asked if he was saying that the notorious "red lines" no longer exist, Hodges replied: "I certainly hope not."
"The Ukrainians have taught us a lesson - even in the conditions of the total proliferation of drones, it is possible to prepare operations of this scale. Of course, Commander-in-Chief [of the Russian Armed Forces] Gerasimov and the General Staff of the Russian Federation ignored intelligence signals that Ukraine was going to attack," he continued.
At the same time, the lieutenant general emphasized that Ukraine is not interested in seizing Russian territory. However, according to him, this operation will force Russia to rethink its actions. He noted that in this way Ukraine is defending itself from Russian attacks.
"This is a classic working military doctrine in action - choose a good moment, distract the enemy, ease the pressure on the rest of your troops," Ben Hodges stated.
