- The fighting in the Kursk region is forcing the Russian Federation to move its troops from other parts of the front, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces are fighting under pressure from the superior Russian army. This was stated by retired US Army Colonel, Professor at the US Army War College Robert Hamilton in a commentary for LIGA.net.
He noted that Ukraine's successful invasion of Russian territory was a great embarrassment for the Kremlin, as well as a significant failure in its attempt to present the invasion of Ukraine as "free" for Russian citizens.
However, according to Hamilton, the ultimate impact of the offensive on Putin's power is currently unclear.
"The Kursk offensive is harming Putin's regime, but is unlikely to lead to its fall. Unless it is combined with other significant military defeats and economic difficulties for the Russian Federation," the expert explains.
At the same time, Boris Kalisky, director of the Prague Institute for Security Studies, stressed in a commentary for the publication that the best prospect for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is a strategic shift in Russian military efforts.
"Russia is losing the initiative, is forced to redeploy troops, political dissent and discontent with Putin are growing within the country. But for now this (the collapse of the Russian regime - Ed.) looks unlikely. Remember the hopes that Progozhin's mutiny would weaken the regime. It turned out the opposite," he added.
