Poland could transfer its MiG-29 multirole fighters to Ukraine only after strengthening its own Air Force with new aircraft.
This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Polish Ministry of Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. "The Polish government, both our government and the government of our predecessors, made multi-billion dollar donations of equipment for Ukraine. This is all we could do," Wiadomosci quotes him as saying.
He noted that his main priority is to preserve Poland's defense capability. The country has ordered F-35s from the United States, but will not receive the first fighters until 2026.
"Only after receiving new aircraft will it be possible to use older aircraft, such as the MiG-29, which are currently still used, among other things, to carry out missions to protect Polish airspace, in a different way. Then we will make a decision," Kosiniak-Kamysz added.
The Polish minister also says that there is a lot of skepticism among NATO member states regarding the issue of shooting down Russian missiles and drones over western Ukraine. "And no single country will make such a decision. I have not seen a single supporter in NATO who would make such a decision," he noted.
